Cyclocross had piqued my interest and I came into the 2013 season late, got a few a small races done and then raced the Nationals. My goals for my second season in 2014 were to race and train properly, increase power, mix it up racing-wise by including time-trials and cyclocross, to race well in our club road league, and to lose weight enjoy my cycling generally. I had also bought a power metre so I needed help with that. I felt if all these details were addressed, then the results would take care of themselves.
I came across A1 Coaching on-line and one of the things that enthused me most was Anthony Walsh’s blog on winter training. This gave me a great insight into how best to train during the winter and what to look out for: e.g don’t be afraid of intervals during the winter, the importance of rest and nutrition, making the most of cross-training, and being aware of ‘the winter champions’!
So I got in touch with A1 for advise how to meet my goals and the information I got was top drawer – very clear and precise. Contact never seemed to be an issue, even when Anthony was on the road training himself. His advise was always practical, realistic and accurate, especially around the structured sessions and recovery. As my fitness developed I felt more confident in races and my positioning improved dramatically. I simply never felt more assured in races scenarios.
As my season drew to a close I compared my goals to what I had written down before the season. A top-12 placing out of 50 riders in the club league, second overall in the Midland series TT league, two top-10 placing in cross races, two top-15 placings in open races, plus actually enjoying the Mondello racing (as opposed to cardiac arrest territory the year before!). Most of all, I had a measurable 20% increase in my FTP/power-output. I can safely say I was very happy with the 2014 season.
